My Experience with the CT1 Personal Calorie Tracker

By Regina Melchiorre
I am one of those people who have struggled with my weight pretty much all of my life. In school, I was definitely "the fat kid" until puberty hit. Through high school, I managed to maintain a normal weight primarily through "fad" dieting - diets I found in magazines, appetite suppressants, etc. I also went on a popular weight loss program for a time, losing 12 pounds. The weekly weigh-ins and meetings got to be a hassle, and I soon went back out on my own.

By the time I graduated from college and got married, I was definitely overweight again (the "gain 10, lose 5" syndrome). I went on one popular weight loss system, which took off a small amount of weight, but only as long as I drank the shakes. I enrolled in a second highly touted weight loss system, where I lost 40 pounds in 9 months. After losing those 40 pounds, I really thought I had the problem "licked". It took several years for the weight to come back, gradually, but boy did it, along with 40 more pounds. I saw pictures of myself and was shocked. How did I ever get this big?

In March of 2000, I was offered a chance to be a "beta tester" for Stayhealthy's calorie tracker device (CT1). I was curious about how it worked and what it would tell me. I truly didn't believe at first that I would lose any kind of weight, as I never had lost more than 5 pounds without some kind of diet in my life. I set up my CT1 unit and began wearing it daily. It looked just like a pager, so much so that airport security asked me to change the settings.

Five days after I started wearing the CT1, I called Stayhealthy. "This thing is broken," I said. "It's not moving off its baseline measurement." They asked me to do "something unusual" for me, so I walked up and down the stairs at work for 10 minutes. I was completely out of breath. To my surprise, when I uploaded my data again, my activity chart showed a sharp increase. It wasn't the unit, it was me! I had become so sedentary I hardly burned anything.

So I began setting activity goals - betting myself that I could burn off 2,800 calories per day, up from 2,400. To achieve my new goals, I began tracking my calorie intake for 2 weeks in order to eliminate 500 calories per day from my diet (2 pieces of toast with butter, 2 cans of regular soda). I lost a pound, then two, then five - One pound per week, every week. My doctor said that was a healthy rate for weight loss. I noticed a lot about my eating habits that I never saw before - like that I eat when I'm tired or reading. I began walking vigorously, burning 360 calories per hour.

I'm up to 40 pounds off now, from a size 22 to a size 16. For the first time, I can honestly say I'm in control of my body. I never thought I could do that before and it's still kind of amazing to me at times. I use my calorie tracker to motivate me - both through the charts and just by having it clipped to my waistband, reminding me in a very subtle way.
